The 2023 Sustainability Awards

Our awards are dedicated to showcasing the organisations and NHS Trusts that have proven to be striving to implement sustainable change within our healthcare sector and be truly driving a greener future for the NHS. The awards benchmark the amazing achievements being made and recognise leaders in their field.  

Our 2023 awards were sponsored by:

First, we jumped into announcing the winners of our NHS categories.

The Sustainability Hero of the Year Award

This award was overseen by Stephen Hall, Managing Director at Silentia UK, had an impressive roster of nominees.

 

The shortlisted candidates included:

·       Cath Cooksey, Sam Coombes, Pharmacy Department, East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust

·       Peter Ford, Royal Devon University Hospital NHS Trust (East)

·       Geoff Banks, NHS Midlands & Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit

 

Ultimately, the winners of this accolade were Cath Cooksey and Sam Coombes from the Pharmacy Department at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust, recognised for their outstanding contributions to sustainability in healthcare.

 

Procurement Award

The Procurement Award, judged by Nathan Swinson-Bullough, Managing Director at Imageco and former Sustainability Partnerships partner, saw a competitive line-up of contenders. 

·       Krithea Baker and Laura Vale, Hampshire Hospitals

·       Alastair Clay, NOECPC

·       Steve Hill, Procurement Department, St Richards Hospital.

In the end, the coveted title was claimed by Krithea Baker and Laura Vale of Hampshire Hospitals, marking their outstanding achievements in the field.

 

Clinical Award

Judging this award was Daria Markova from Open Medical.

The Clinical Award was expertly judged by Daria Markova from Open Medical. The shortlisted contenders for this prestigious recognition included: 

·       Claire Williams and Louise Bond, Pharmacy Department, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

·       Exeter Anaesthetic Department

·       Hampshire Hospitals Virtual Ward team

Ultimately, the honour of being named the winner was bestowed upon Claire Williams and Louise Bond of the Pharmacy Department at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, recognising their outstanding contributions and achievements in the clinical field.


Sustainability Education

Nick from Rio assumed the role of judge for a prestigious award. The shortlisted candidates included:

·       NHS Kent and Medway Green Team

·       Rebecca Waters, Health Improvement and Inclusion Manager, Net Zero and Anchor Organisations, NHS North East London

·       Faculty of Sustainable Healthcare, NHS England Education NE

Ultimately, the coveted award was clinched by Rebecca Waters, recognising her outstanding contributions in the capacity of Health Improvement and Inclusion Manager for Net Zero and Anchor Organisations within NHS North East London.

 

Sustainability Manager/ Team of the Year

The Sustainability Manager/Team of the Year award saw several notable contenders vying for recognition. The shortlisted nominees included:

·       Catering Team, Hampshire Hospitals FT

·       UCLH Sustainability Team

·       Louise Stewart, Medway NHS Foundation Trust

The judging panel, led by Amy Newton from Medtronic, carefully evaluated the contributions of each nominee. Ultimately, the coveted title was clinched by the Catering Team from Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust, securing their position as the winner of the Sustainability Manager/Team of the Year award.


Sustainability Partnership of the Year

The Sustainability Partnership of the Year award, expertly judged by Jenna Davies from Vernacare, showcased commendable initiatives and collaborations striving for environmental responsibility. The shortlisted candidates included: 

·       University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

·       Cath Cooksey and Sam Coombes working with Chiesi ltd 

·       Thomas Jordan NCHC x Hiyacar Pool Car Initiative

However, the ultimate recognition went to Ben Rogers of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, who emerged as the well-deserved winner of this prestigious accolade. This acknowledgment underscores their outstanding efforts and commitment to sustainability within the healthcare sector.

 

We then jumped into our business award categories.

 Carbon Award

The Carbon Award, adjudicated by Matt Cooling from Think Sustain, recognised outstanding contributions in the field.

Shortlisted was:

·       Jump

·       Voltbikes

·       Vernacare

Jump emerged as the deserving winner, showcasing exemplary efforts in carbon-related initiatives. Jump won the award because our innovative platform is helping NHS staff from 26 Trusts make significant contributions to the NHS's 2040 Net Zero goal. The platform motivates staff through a points system, rewarding top performers with vouchers each month. Beyond the NHS, Jump's platform is making a positive impact that extends to patients and local communities.

 

Circular Economy

Janet Smith, Head of Sustainability at Wolverhampton NHS Trust, served as the judge for the award. Shortlisted was:

·       Sharpsmart

·       Surgical Holdings

·       NewGen Surgical

Ultimately, Surgical Holdings emerged as the winner of the prestigious award. The award recognises the Surgical Holding's success in refurbishing end-of-life medical instruments, benefiting hospital staff and improving patient outcomes.

 

MedTech Innovation of the Year

The MedTech Innovation of the Year award underwent meticulous scrutiny under the discerning eye of Vee Mapunde, Programme Director for NHIR Surgical MedTech Co-operative. The shortlisted candidates included:

·       Wellspect Healthcare

·       NewGen Surgical

·       Stryker

Ultimately, the coveted title was bestowed upon Wellspect Healthcare, proclaiming them as the triumphant winner of the MedTech Innovation of the Year award. Wellspect won the award for integrating bio-based materials into the LoFric Elle catheter, a major advancement in an industry reliant on fossil-based materials.

 

Supplier of the Year

The prestigious Supplier of the Year award underwent a rigorous evaluation led by Andrew Bradley from NHS England. The shortlist featured the following noteworthy contenders:

·       Servita

·       Stryker

·       Hark

Emerging as the ultimate victor, Servita secured the coveted title of Supplier of the Year, marking their outstanding achievement in the esteemed competition. Servita played a key role in creating the Patient Care Aggregator (AGG) using advanced technology, aligning with the Greener NHS initiative.

 

Sustainable Software of the Year

In the evaluation overseen by judge Richard Hixon, the Sustainable Software of the Year award witnessed a competitive field of contenders. The shortlist featured noteworthy contributions from:

·       Glow New Media with Liverpool Universities Hospital Foundation Trust and Health Innovation North West Coast

·       Servita

·       SMS Technology

Remarkably, Servita clinched not only the Supplier of the Year title but also this prestigious award, demonstrating their exceptional prowess. With this dual triumph, Servita reaffirms its commitment to excellence in the realm of sustainable software solutions.
