World Water Day: The NHS Water Agenda

World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22nd. It’s a global initiative that the United Nations established in 1993. The day aims to highlight the importance of freshwater and advocate for water conservation. In 2023, we mark the 21st anniversary of this event, using it to celebrate water and raise awareness about its essential role.

Did you know the NHS spent approximately £260 million on water and sewerage in 2020/2021?

This does not just come as a financial cost for the NHS, but it also costs the environment. Nevertheless, the NHS is dedicated to reducing its water usage and enhancing sustainability. In line with NHS England's guidance, implementing water-efficiency measures could potentially yield substantial financial savings of up to 20%, equating to an annual saving of £9.5 million.

Join us for this webinar as we discuss the services, processes, and that can assist the NHS in reducing water waste and changing behaviours.

The Future of Sustainability in the NHS: A Reuse and Repurpose Revolution

The NHS' supply chain is responsible for 66% of its total carbon emissions. Being one of the world's largest organisations, the NHS must lead in sustainability, particularly given the challenges of rising costs, growing demand, and environmental pressures in healthcare worldwide. To address these issues, the NHS can leverage two key strategies: reuse and repurposing.

But reuse isn’t always straightforward in the NHS because a lot of equipment is not reusable for reasons of clinical safety. So how can how can hospitals look to increase product reuse?

In our upcoming webinar, professionals from across the NHS and businesses offering relevant products or services will discuss how to incorporate sustainability into the NHS supply chain with reuse and repurposing technologies, services and processes.

Sustainable Supply Chains: Pushing the NHS towards a Greener Future

The NHS is committed to reaching net zero by 2040 for their directly controlled emissions, and by 2045 for the emissions they influence through goods and services bought from their suppliers. But, to achieve this ambitious goal, the NHS needs a great deal of collaboration from their suppliers.

The Net Zero Supplier Roadmap sets out a step-by-step timeline to help suppliers align with the NHS’s net zero goals between now and 2030 (including a two year grace period on milestones up to 2027 for SMEs and voluntary, community and social enterprises). But what extra steps will the NHS and their suppliers need to take to ensure their success on their net zero journey? And how easy will this transition be for both parties?

This webinar will see NHS and industry professionals, and business will products or services to aid the NHS in moving towards a more sustainable supply chain come together to discuss what will be needed to build a greener future.

NHS Waste: How to Build a Circular Economy

NHS Waste: How to Build a Circular Economy

Our National Health Service produces thousands of tonnes of waste every year, with 133,000 tonnes of this being plastic waste. The Greener NHS program has NHS waste high on their agenda for paving the way to a more sustainable future for our healthcare service, which so far is having a strong effect. Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has removed 200,000 items of single use plastic alone from their waste in 2019/20.

But how can hospitals look to reduce their waste and begin to implement a more circular waste strategy?

For this webinar, we will be inviting industry professionals and businesses with new products and services that can help to combat waste and introduce circular thinking into the NHS’s green plans.

Speaker Announcement

Guy Wing, Contract Manager, Sharpsmart
Sharpsmart entered the UK healthcare market in 2000 challenging the long-instilled practices of clinical waste being managed as a back-of-dock service with no infection risk considerations, ushering in a new standard of risk prevention by putting safety, intelligent movement and clinical design at the forefront of its waste management practices. One of Sharpsmart’s principle founding values is also to achieve the highest level of sustainability possible through innovation, product, and process.

Clare Atkinson, Director of Research and Development, Nu Green

Talk Title: The Importance of Data in Sustainable Waste Management

At NuGreen we are working to deliver a more sustainable healthcare sector through our bespoke consultation process, educational packages and research and development. We take a 4-stage approach to helping healthcare settings save money, reduce emissions and increase the percentage of recycled material: Collect, Analyse, Implement, and Futureproof.

We believe generating and analysing business data can paint a picture of sustainability credentials. This data creates a baseline to highlight key areas of best practice and areas of concern, by analysing this data businesses can make informed decisions to implement long term sustainable change.

By setting Science Based Targets, then re-auditing and analysing this data, you can clearly track progress against the original baseline data. We work with local NHS trusts and other companies, within the healthcare sector, to help them analyse their business practices, product selection and waste management processes.

The idea is that we look to create circular processes that bring in a network of expertise from other industries to maximise the planet’s resources, minimise waste and reduce costs to the sector. We believe in using data and science-based targets with our clients to create and implement a path to a sustainable future.

Earth Day: Investing in our Planet

Be a part of the green revolution.

The theme of this year’s Earth Day event is ‘Invest in our planet’. Time is running out for us to solve the climate crisis and reverse the negative effects we have had on the environment. Now is the time to act, now is the time to invest in our planet.

The number of new sustainable products and services coming to market is increasing year on year, all that’s left to do is for these to be invested in the right spaces. The NHS’s green agenda is stronger than ever before, and they need to be ahead of the pack when it comes to green investments to reap the benefits and put their best foot forward.

To celebrate Earth Day 2023, we will be inviting speakers from a range of companies with new, innovative products and services that could benefit the NHS’s green agenda.

Building Sustainability around Women’s Health

Building Sustainability around Women’s Health

Real sustainable development will only be possible if women’s health is prioritised. For many years, the majority of new medical devices, technologies and services have been developed around being used for men, leaving many women’s health needs unconsidered and a significant gender bias issue. But now, new activity in relation to women’s HealthTech is increasing at an astronomical rate.

With it being reported that 50% of women do not understand their own hormones, it is vital that we place women’s health at the centre of development. Thus came the development of FemTech, a spawn of HealthTech which focuses specifically on women’s health. Think fertility solutions, period-tracking apps, pregnancy and nursing care, women’s sexual wellness and reproductive system care. And that is only the beginning.

Female-led innovation will be key within the field of healthcare. For our next webinar we will be inviting a range of industry experts and NHS professionals to discuss the need for women’s health to be at the centre of sustainable development.

Speakers:

  • Sam Pitman, Independent Occupational Therapist and Co-Founder of Eco Essex

  • Jacqueline Gordon, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist at Great Ormond Street Hospital

  • Emilė Radytė, CEO of Samphire Neuroscience

Climate Change Summit: The Challenges in Delivering a Net-Zero NHS

After it was discovered that the NHS is responsible for an estimated 5% of the UKs carbon footprint, it became the world’s first national health system to make net zero commitments and develop clear deliverables and milestones. Whilst the NHS is contributing to climate change, climate change is also having its own effect on the NHS. 900 people were killed by soaring temperatures in 2019 while nearly 18 million patients visited GP practices in areas that exceed the World Health Organisation’s air pollution limit.

For our first event of the day, we invited NHS staff from a multitude of departments to speak about their sustainability journey and the challenges they have faced so far.
